Long-haul networks are the forte of a select group of large trans-national
and global carriers and span both regional and extended geographic distances
(up to thousands of kilometers). These networks connect to metropolitan area
networks and amongst each other to extend "global" connectivity between
regional domains. The primary concern in these networks has been transport
capacity, as limited by the underlying technologies. Although long-distance
transport networks have traditionally also been SONET/SDH-based, fiber-
exhaust concerns have led carriers to deploy DWDM technology on a wide

careful analog engineering provisions are required to maintain channel qualities
